High Flow & High Speed 3D Printer Filaments | Maximising Throughput

High flow and high speed filaments are engineered to meet the volumetric demands of modern, high-acceleration 3D printers. Unlike standard materials, these filaments feature a modified molecular structure that allows for a higher Melt Flow Index (MFI) and faster thermal transition. This ensures that the material melts uniformly at high speeds and crystallises rapidly upon extrusion, maintaining sharp details even at velocities exceeding 300mm/s.

What is the difference between standard and high speed filament? High speed filament is formulated with a lower viscosity when molten, allowing it to flow through the hotend with less resistance. It also incorporates specialised additives that accelerate cooling, preventing the "slumping" or loss of detail often seen when standard filaments are pushed beyond their volumetric flow limits.

Key Technical Advantages

To achieve consistent results at high speeds, the material must perform across three critical stages: melting, flow, and solidification.

  • Enhanced Volumetric Flow: These filaments can typically handle a volumetric flow rate of 20–30 mm³/s, compared to the 10–15 mm³/s found in standard PLA. This allows for faster print speeds without the risk of underextrusion or "clicking" in the extruder.

  • Rapid Cooling & Crystallisation: High speed materials are designed to "set" almost instantly. This is vital for maintaining dimensional accuracy on overhangs and small details when the print head is moving at high accelerations.

  • Consistent Diameter & Roundness: Because high speed printing is less forgiving of material variance, these filaments maintain a strict diameter tolerance (typically ±0.02mm) to ensure a perfectly consistent flow through the nozzle
