PBAT 3D Printer Filament | Biodegradable, Tough & Flexible

Polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) filament blends represent a significant advancement in sustainable additive manufacturing. As a fully biodegradable random copolymer, PBAT is most commonly blended with PLA (Polylactic Acid) to create a material that bridges the gap between rigid bioplastics and traditional elastomers. At 3D Printer Superstore, we offer these specialised blends for applications requiring enhanced impact resistance, environmental sustainability, and a unique "soft-touch" matte finish.

What is PBAT filament and why is it blended? Pure PBAT is highly flexible but difficult to print due to its low mechanical stiffness. When blended with PLA, it acts as a high-performance toughening agent. This resulting "Bio-Flex" material offers the ease of PLA printing with the durability and flexibility of a semi-rigid technical polymer, all while remaining industrially compostable.

Technical Advantages: The Hybrid Performance

PBAT blends are engineered for users who find standard PLA too brittle and TPU too difficult to manage in standard extruders.

  • Impact Energy Absorption: The addition of PBAT into a PLA matrix significantly increases the "elongation at break." This means parts will bend or deform under stress rather than shattering, making it ideal for protective cases and snap-fit assemblies.

  • Superior Interlayer Adhesion: PBAT blends exhibit exceptional Z-axis strength. The polymer chain structure creates a highly cohesive bond between layers, reducing the risk of delamination in functional prototypes.
