TierTime UP Fila ABS+ | The High-Strength Engineering Standard

Why standard ABS isn't always enough

Functional prototyping usually hits a wall when parts need to survive real-world mechanical stress. That’s where TierTime UP Fila ABS+ comes in. By reinforcing a high-grade ABS base with Polycarbonate (PC), TierTime has created a filament that bridges the gap between 'look-alike' models and end-use industrial components.

At the 3D Printer Superstore, we’ve seen this material solve the two biggest headaches in professional printing: warping on large-format builds and brittle layer lines. If you are running an UP300 or UP600, this is your go-to for parts that actually need to work.

Spec UP Fila ABS+ (The Pro Choice) Standard ABS (Generic)
Composition PC-Enhanced ABS Blend Standard Acrylonitrile
Real-World Benefit Zero-warp on large surface areas Prone to lifting/cracking
Max Service Temp Stable up to 105°C Softens at 85°C
Nozzle Temp 260°C - 270°C 230°C - 240°C
Surface Professional Matte Often overly glossy

What sets ABS+ apart in the workshop?

  • Exceptional Dimensional Stability: Large prints stay flat. The PC-blend significantly reduces the natural shrinkage rate of the plastic as it cools, meaning your 200mm parts actually measure 200mm.

  • Tougher Interlayer Bonding: Most ABS parts fail because the layers pull apart under tension. The higher extrusion temperature of ABS+ ensures the layers fuse into a nearly isotropic solid.

  • Matte Finish for Pros: It prints with a refined, low-sheen finish that hides layer lines and looks like an injection-moulded part right off the bed.

  • Tiertime Ecosystem Optimisation: While it works on most high-temp machines, it is factory-tuned for the UP series' "Smart Support" logic—meaning supports snap off by hand without scarring the model.

Does ABS+ require an enclosed printer? It Ceertainly Helps- especially for large prints! To get the strength benefits of the Polycarbonate blend, you need to maintain a stable ambient temperature. We recommend using an enclosed machine like the UP mini 2 ES or UP300 to prevent rapid cooling and ensure maximum layer fusion.

Is it harder to print than standard ABS? Actually, it's easier. The "plus" in the name refers to the added stability. It adheres better to the build plate and is far less temperamental regarding "corner lift" than generic, unreinforced ABS filaments.

What is the best way to smooth ABS+? Because of the PC content, it reacts slightly slower to acetone than 100% ABS. You can still vapour smooth it, but it takes about 20% longer to reach a gloss finish. For most engineering users, the natural matte finish is preferred.
